All about brewer
I’ve always been an individual sport kind of guy and
played tennis, racquetball, ran track, etc. Maybe
I’m just antisocial. I bought my first mountain
bike back in 1988 when I was at the Air Force
Academy and spent a couple of years riding it all
around the local mountains. I sold it when I got
stationed in Oklahoma (no mountains), bought another
one when I moved to Montana in 1994 and spent three
years riding the mountains up there. I moved to
Texas 10 years ago and put the bike away thinking
there was nothing worth riding around here. I was
wrong.
I did the marathon thing for a while four years ago,
but only training to run in a straight line on
pavement kept me in a repeating cycle of getting
injured or recovering from an injury, so I swore off
long-distance running a couple of years ago and
migrated to a new hobby – motorcycles.
I met NB in 2005 through our mutual addiction to the
BMW F650 GS. We’ve since spent many thousands of
miles together on trips through
Mexico,
Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.
Although I’m still a loner at heart, I’ve definitely
seen the performance benefits gained by people pushing
each other to a higher level. So when NB mentioned
this Adventure Racing thing to me in October and said
that they needed another teammate or two I said sign
me up. I needed some motivation to get me back into
shape and having some teammates who depend on me has
kept me training even when I didn’t want to. Plus I
enjoy running through the woods, mountain biking, and
I am pretty good at navigation. I spent a few summers
as an instructor at the AF survival school in the
Rockies
and feel at home in the boonies.
If anything I have a good sense of humor and should at
least keep us laughing when things get ugly.
